According to Plutarch's account of the founding of Alexandria, Homer appeared to Alexander the Great in a dream and described the site of the future city, where:

"An island set in ocean deep, Lies off fair Egypt's rich and fertile land, and the name of the island is called Pharos."

"Alexander's dream" was realized when the future capital of the Lagides and second largest city in the Roman empire, and the great commercial port of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was founded in 331 BC on the site of the Ancient Egyptian village of Rakhotis. It was designed by the architect Dinocrates and lay between the Mediterranean coast in the north and Lake Mareotis (now Lake Mariut) in the south. Although Alexandria has retained little of its ancient glory, it is still a legendary city which has been continually enriched by the numerous cultural influences exerted throughout its history. To many, it is the symbol of openmindedness and cosmopolitanism.
